about the artist
uis Sanchis was born and raised in Spain. He moved to NYC in 1994 where he started his career as a professional photographer. Luis’ images always had a feel of the experimental with a deep understanding of color and lighting techniques. He was rapidly picked by the iconic British magazine THE FACE where he started working as a regular contributor from 1996 until its closing.
Luis uses his camera as a means of self expression and exploration. Ultimately what he sees is what he is. His portfolio covers a wide spectrum of sectors from Fashion to Music, Sports, Celebrities, Beauty, Landscape and Film.
Luis Sanchis’ photography is both ironic and cinematic. Luis finds inspiration as freely in high art and low art, street culture and nature, and his own experience. His love for nature, observation, Kurosawa, Korean pop culture and German expressionism, have all shaped his taste for the absurd and the singularly beautiful, and his color palette draws unmistakably from a childhood spent in Spain.
Luis's first monograph is a kaleidoscopic showcase on the impressive body of work that the imaginative artist has conjured up during his 20+ year career. Limited to 1000 copies, the book features images he produced for UK magazines such as The Face and Arena during the 1990's, as well as campaigns for clients such as Nike and Gucci and collaborations with musicians like Daft Punk or Robbie Williams. Recognizable faces from Kate Moss to Karen Elson, Jude Law or Vincent Gallo share the space with more personal work.
